July - Chirk is bloomin' marvelous

Chirk Railway station has won the coveted first prize in the Wales in Bloom competition. The railway station on the Chester to Shrewsbury line is cared for by the Friends of Chirk Station who adopted it in 2004. Working with the Chester – Shrewsbury Rail Partnership and Arriva Trains Wales they have implemented a series of improvements which have been recognised by this award.

The competition aims to encourage local communities to improve their local stations and the judges look for not just colourful planting but for the care that has been taken and the absence of litter. The initial impression was most important.

The station was judged in mid July and Sheila Dee, Community Rail officer for the line commented that this was the first time they had entered Wales in Bloom and that they knew competition would be fierce. However they had all worked together to show how the station had benefited from community involvement.

Second prize was awarded to the Welsh Highland Railway and the 3rd prize to the Friends of Prestatyn Station.

Chirk Station is no stranger to awards. Last year the project won the Network Rail Environment award.
